Hope and Door Rental Assistance is a national rental assistance program that will accept applications from EDI clients in all our sites. Some important things to keep in mind when submitting applications or referring individuals:

  • Rental assistance is available only for families who have experienced a temporary economic disruption (unexpected expense, job loss, illness or injury, unpaid parental leave, etc.) but who can demonstrate ability to pay moving forward (currently employed, receiving public benefits, proof of new job offer, etc.).

  • Families or individuals must have a child under 18 living in the home at least 51% of the time in order to qualify

  • Approved payments are for two months of rent, with no maximum cap, and are paid directly to the landlord.

  • Once complete, applications can be approved and paid within 7 days.

The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army can assist 50 households each week with $300 towards rent (or deposit), or $150 each towards rent and utilities. Here’s how to apply:

Step 1: Go to the Salvation Army’s website and enter your zip code. IMPORTANT: The application portal opens up each Monday around 8am and appointments go VERY quickly so be sure to try and do this step as close to 8am on Monday as possible.

Step 2: You’ll need to enter your email and give them an access code so be sure you can sign in to the email you give.

Step 3: If the portal is showing "assistance not available for your zip code," this does not mean they are not helping your zip code, it just means that they are full for the week. If that message shows up, please try again on Monday when the slots for the week open back up.

Step 4: If you do get one of the 50 slots a week, you’ll be prompted to fill out a form. To ensure that you don’t lose your spot, try to fill out only the required information. You can give the optional answers to your assigned case worker later on. It takes about a week to process the funding. You will also need an electronic copy of your lease so be sure to have that ahead of time!

Please note, you are only eligible to access this assistance once every two years. If funds are being used towards rent, they must cover the remaining balance owed.
